Trafford Waters Care Home residents have a ball at The Padel Club TraffordCity

Five residents in their 80s living at Trafford Waters Care Home in TraffordCity, Manchester; are proving that age is no barrier to new experiences, as they stepped onto the Padel court for the very first time.

Ranked as the world’s fastest-growing sport, Padel has taken the UK by storm, with 893 Padel courts across 300 venues nationwide and 400,000 active players, according to the LTA.

The residents took part in an introductory game of Padel at The Padel Club in TraffordCity, which recently completed its building works, making the club the biggest purpose-built Padel facility in the UK.

The Padel Club TraffordCity now has 11 fully operational and playable courts and also features a popular clubhouse and outdoor social spaces, designed to foster community and connection beyond the court.

Speaking about her experience, 81-year-old, Ann Williamson said, “I loved it, it felt brilliant, I was energised and over the moon I was actually able to do it – I’d love to do it again.”

Teammate, 82-year-old Kathleen Wild added, “I used to play bowls and won many trophies in my time. I had a great time playing padel and can’t wait to do it again – I highly recommend it.”

Described as one of the most accessible, social sports that is suitable for all ages and abilities, Padel’s popularity has surged. It is easy to pick up and designed to encourage teamwork and fun, making it a perfect new activity for the Trafford Waters residents to enjoy together.

Ellie Wibberley, Home Manager at Trafford Waters Care Home, said, “Moving into a care home is not just about receiving care, it’s about opening the door to new opportunities, friendships, and experiences, and this get together really demonstrated that.

“Being close to The Padel Club and other facilities is great as it enables residents to integrate and socialise outside the home – everyone had a brilliant time.”

The Trafford Waters Care Home is located with TraffordCity – the UK’s foremost retail and leisure destination, which attracts 44 million visits a year and is home to leading attractions including The Trafford Centre, Trafford Golf Centre and the recently rebranded ‘Snow Centre’ (formerly Chill Factore). The Padel Club TraffordCity has seen enormous success since opening its first phase in March this year and has regularly been ranked as the top performing and most popular regional club via the official Playtomic platform.
