A Tribute to Councillor David Lancaster MBE – Words by James Whittaker MD of Peel Waters and Stephen Wild MD of Peel Land

The Peel Group is deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Councillor David Lancaster. We extend our heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, colleagues and to all at Salford City Council.

Cllr Lancaster played a key role in the longstanding joint venture partnership between Salford City Council and The Peel Group, through which Salford City Community Stadium was conceived, designed, delivered and operated. As Board Directors of the stadium company, we worked closely together to ensure the stadium became a source of pride for Salford as the home of both Salford Red Devils and Sale Sharks RFC.

His passion for rugby and enthusiasm infused every discussion, decision and matchday moment. Yet Cllr Lancaster’s dedication to the City extended far beyond sport. As a supporter of Peel’s investment in MediaCity and Salford Quays, he recognised early on the transformational regeneration impact it would bring. His advocacy, leadership and belief in partnership working helped shape one of the UK’s most significant creative and digital hubs, delivering opportunities for local people and contributing to Salford’s remarkable economic and cultural growth.

We are grateful for his partnership, his vision and his tireless commitment to improving lives across Salford. Cllr Lancaster will be greatly missed by all of us at The Peel Group.
