WAS IT WHAT I EXPECTED?

Over the last two weeks, I have been completing work experience with Peel Retail and Leisure and Peel Waters. I was a combination of nervous and excited for my work experience. I researched into the company and their developments, I knew I would be learning a lot from the experts I was going to be working with.

I thought I would be mainly observing and taking notes during this experience, however I was welcomed and encouraged to contribute ideas and complete tasks such as competitor analysis and creating decks to present.

peel waters

My first week was spent with Peel Waters. I was first introduced to Emma Green, Communications and Marketing Lead, who instantly made me feel at ease with her friendliness and the enthusiasm she brings to the workplace.

Emma talked me through the Water’s portfolio, which is impressive, diverse, and continuously expanding. I was amazed by their previous developments and their plans for future projects.

sharing a passion for work

Then I was introduced to the rest of the team, including Kate Holland, Marketing Director and James Whittaker, Peel Waters Managing Director. The whole team were just as welcoming and uplifting, and they shared a passion for their work. Kate talked me through the background of Peel and their foundation work, such as Embassy Village—a project that really stood out to me and highlighted James and Kate’s genuine passion for helping others.

During this week, I was assigned two main projects to complete. I was encouraged to use my imagination, allowing me to contribute my ideas with confidence. I thoroughly enjoyed these marketing tasks and couldn’t help but get excited about combining my interest in property development with my marketing knowledge I have gained from previous work experience and my degree.

To end my week with Peel Waters, Emma gave me a tour of Media City—where her career first began—and explained its heritage, which was previously wholly owned by Peel.

Peel Retail & Leisure

In my second week, I worked with Peel Retail and Leisure, focusing on Trafford Palazzo and Quayside. I joined Molly Lewis, Marketing Manager and Lauren Hopkins, Associate Marketing Director for Retail and Leisure.

I was involved in meetings and discussions for events and social media content. Molly and Lauren shared their stories and expertise working within Peel Retail and Leisure, making me feel welcome into the team.

I conducted competitor research and analysis to help identify a social media strategy for Trafford Palazzo. I presented my ideas to Molly and Lauren, who gave positive and encouraging feedback.

As I continued my time with the Retail and Leisure team, I had the opportunity to tour Trafford Palazzo and get a ‘behind-the-scenes’ insight. This motivated me even more to help the team.

I have enjoyed working with Peel Waters and Peel Retail and Leisure. I am so grateful for the opportunity to work with such a passionate, driven, caring, and inspiring team. I’m excited to be staying on for a third week to help put our ideas into action.

WHY DO I THINK DOING WORK EXPERIENCE IS IMPORTANT?

Throughout my studies at The University of Salford, I have completed different work experiences along the way. I have done this to gain first-hand industry experience alongside my degree.

I believe this is important to apply the theory I have learnt from my degree within a business environment and to gain insight and knowledge from industry experts. Now that I’ve completed my degree, I can combine this with the skills and experience I’ve gained from previous internships.

truly encouraging and uplifting

My work experience with Peel has been truly encouraging and uplifting as I take my first steps toward employment within Marketing. I feel equipped with the knowledge and confidence to propose ideas that align with strategy and brand image.
